Catching up with Courtney Quinn

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 11.46.19I’ve mentioned Courtney’s blog a number of times on previous posts and if you read my blog you know she’s one of my favourite bloggers. For those of you who don’t know, Courtney is a New Yorker with an awesome sense of style – she’s colourful and her pictures will bring a smile to your face. With 127k followers on Instagram and 16k followers on Twitter, Courtney has managed to transform her passion into her career and I asked her to tell us all about it.

So grab a cup of tea, sit back and get to know Courtney and her awesome blog, Colormecourtney.

1. How did you first get into blogging?

I actually started blogging really as a creative outlet, and because I was bored. I knew I wanted to work in Fashion but was studying business, math, accounting and finance in school. I thought a Fashion Brand wouldn’t take me seriously if I walked in with only business degrees and felt having a fashion blog would serve as proof that I understood the industry and would make a good asset to a brand. It’s kind of ironic that what I started to fill my spare time and use as tool to help me get a job has become my career!

2. What was your greatest blogging mistake and what did you learn from that?

When I first started taking blogging seriously, I really wanted to grow my brand. As a result I looked at all the super successful bloggers out there and tried to do what they were doing, but that wasn’t necessarily me! When I stopped caring what others thought and stayed true to myself in my writing, posing, content and outfits my blog really started to grow.

3. Who has impacted you most in blogging and why?

New York City! I think the point of blogging is that you drive your own style, so I try not to let other people or brands drive mine, but living in New York City has definitely inspired my style and helped me bring quirky touches and fun aspects to my wardrobe that support this great city!

4. How do you manage to keep your blog up and running and still have time for your personal/social life?

Oh yikes – well I don’t have much of a personal life, but I do more so now that I’m blogging full-time. Until recently I was blogging at night and working full time at Coach so I had very little free time – all of my free time was spent shooting or building Color Me Courtney. I love what I do and I love blogging so if I’m spending a weekend creating content for Color Me Courtney, I try to plan fun activities that I would like to do even if I wasn’t capturing the moment – that way I can double dip and have my free time and blog time overlap.

5. What type of strategy do you think is better to enhance traffic to the blog?

A combo of two things – 1 being active in your community, reading and commenting on other blogs and supporting your fellow bloggers and 2 – creating killer content on a consistent basis that readers can’t help but to read and share!

6. Have you ever suffered from bloggers block? If so, how did you try to overcome it?
I’m lucky enough that I always have a lot of inspiration and be surrounded by a very inspiring city filled with continuous opportunities for content and creation, but I do sometimes have a little bit of writers block when I’m getting ready to write a post. In that case I edit my photos first, and sometimes I can beat the block that way – if that doesn’t work I either go on a walk or take a shower, usually the moment I take my mind off it Inspiration strikes in the most unexpected places!

I don’t really remember my life pre-blogging, because Color Me Courtney is my current reality but I think it’s probably the size of my inbox and being my own boss. As the sole owner, content creator and person behind Color Me Courtney everything falls on me, of course I have a great support system with my photographer and boyfriend, and my family helps when they can but if I miss an opportunity because I forget to respond to an email it’s my fault, no one else’s!

8. What’s your favourite post(s) to date?

Food & travel:

9. Everyone has their bad habits, what’s yours?
Not hanging up my clothes, I’m the worst! I come home, switch into something comfy and leave my jacket on the couch, or floor or chair … anywhere but the hanger, so my closet is always a big mess! I also chomp my gum when I get stressed.

Visit Iceland, Pet an elephant, Write a book, Learn another language and Go to Space (okay, that last one probably won’t ever happen!).

11. Name 3 people that inspire you

Diane Von Furstenberg – the woman is ICONIC and paved the way for so many amazing women to follow, Sazan Hendrix – I’m obsessed with her youtube videos, Dylan Lauren – this candy obsessed entreprenuer took the platform she was born onto and propelled herself and her business to the next level, all while being a mom of two!

12. What top tips would you give to someone who is thinking of starting their own blog?

Have a clear view and voice, invest in a good website and camera, stay true to yourself and most importantly have fun!

Lots of love,
