So, why Mindy? First, she has a way of inspiring people to look at life with humour. I mean, who doesn’t love her? She is hilarious! And second, she is full of lessons that will inspire anyone.
I have to admit I have only just started watching “The Mindy Project” properly. I know, embarrassing. The truth is I’d watched a few episodes here and there and always found it great but only a few months ago did I actually decide to download it (legally, of course).
Obviously, I am now obsessed.
Lesson #1: If anyone can do it, you can
Mindy is a big advocate of working hard for what you want. So stop thinking you are not capable of something and work for it. Do not make yourself the victim! In her own words: “I work a lot. Like, a lot a lot. I feel like I must have been watching TV as a kid and that cartoon parable about the industrious ants and the lazy grasshopper came on at a vital moment when my soft little brain was hardening, and the moral of it was imprinted on me.”
Lesson #2: Confidence is everything
“If you got it, flaunt it. If you don’t got it, flaunt it.” Mindy reminds us that everyone is different and whatever your “it” is, be confident enough to flaunt it. Love yourself for who you are and find your confidence – cliche but true!
“If Hollywood were filled just with perfect-looking people, then soap operas would be the most-watched things in the world. But they’re not […] Successful actors with long careers are usually talented actors with charismatic screen presences, and all of them must exude one thing: confidence”
Lesson #3: “If you want to wear lipstick it doesn’t mean you can’t have gone to college”
Unfortunately women that are interested in things like fashion or make-up are still seen as frivolous. Mindy shows that you can be intelligent and wear makeup and what you wear doesn’t show if you’ve read a book or not. Working hard is what truly matters – not if you have a necklace on.
Lesson #4: People are just people, no matter how successful
One of my favourite Mindy quotes is “Oh sh*t, guys, I’m so excited, no one I saw today will I see tomorrow so I can wear the same outfit again.” For me this just shows how she is absolutely fine with showing she is a real person, contrary to other celebrities. Can you imagine a Kardashian saying that? Of course not. Anyway, I knew I couldn’t be the only one avoiding pictures just so I can wear the same outfit again another day!
Lesson #5: You don’t have to be mean just because you are successful
The typical rom-coms show professional women who have completely forgotten how to be nice. They’re usually mean, lonely women who are work obsessed (The Devil Wears Prada, The Proposal, the list could go on…). What I love about Mindy is that she shows us that you can be work-focused but still be a normal human being. You can still be kind to people and find time for love, a social life (even if limited) and you don’t have to treat everyone like sh*t (does my post have too many swearwords today??)
Lesson #6: Sometimes life does give you romantic comedy moments
No explanation needed. Like with Mindy – sometimes, it just happens.
Lesson #7: Be your own role model
Mindy has said before she is her own role model. She is her own biggest critic and her own biggest fan, and she recommends it. Work on yourself first!
Lots of love,
